Pedra de Lume is an extinct volcanic crater on Sal's east coast, now filled with a shallow salt lake. The salt concentration is so high that visitors float effortlessly, much like in the Dead Sea. The crater floor is covered in white salt crusts, and the surrounding red and black volcanic hills create a stark, lunar-like backdrop. Historically, salt was mined here from the 19th century until the 1980s, and remnants of old machinery and rail tracks remain. The lake's mineral-rich mud is said to have therapeutic properties, and many visitors coat themselves in it before rinsing in the sea nearby.
