Ponta Preta Lighthouse stands on a dramatic black volcanic promontory at the northern tip of Tarrafal Bay. Built in the late 19th century, the lighthouse is still active and serves as a navigational aid for ships. The site offers breathtaking panoramic views of the coastline, the bay, and the Atlantic Ocean. Visitors can climb to the base of the lighthouse (the tower itself is not open to the public) and walk along the rugged cliffs, where waves crash against the dark rocks. It's a popular spot for photography and whale watching during migration season.
Don't miss
- Take in the panoramic view of Tarrafal Bay and the Atlantic from the lighthouse grounds.
- Photograph the contrast of the white lighthouse against the black volcanic rocks.
- Visit during whale migration season (February–April) for a chance to spot humpbacks offshore.
