Carleton Martello Tower is a National Historic Site perched on a hill overlooking Saint John. Built between 1812 and 1815 to defend the city from American attack, the tower never saw combat. Its thick stone walls and circular design are typical of Martello towers used by the British Empire. Today, visitors can explore the restored interior, including a powder magazine and garrison room, and climb to the roof for sweeping views of the harbour, the Reversing Falls, and the city skyline. Interpretive exhibits detail the tower's military history.
Don't miss
- Climb to the roof for 360-degree views of Saint John Harbour and the Bay of Fundy
- Explore the restored garrison room and powder magazine inside the tower
- See the original cannon and learn about the tower's role in the War of 1812
