American Falls lies entirely on the U.S. side of the Niagara River but is best viewed from the Canadian shore, offering a sweeping panorama. It is 1,060 feet wide and drops 176 feet, though its base is obscured by a massive pile of boulders (talus) that accumulated after a 1954 rock slide. Unlike Horseshoe Falls, the flow over American Falls is significantly reduced at night to divert water for hydroelectric power. Visitors can see it from Table Rock or the Skylon Tower in Canada, or get closer via the Maid of the Mist boat tour, which ventures into the basin below.

Don't miss

  • Maid of the Mist boat tour: get drenched in the mist at the base of the falls
  • Observation deck at Table Rock: unobstructed view of American Falls and Horseshoe Falls
  • View from Skylon Tower: 775-foot-high revolving restaurant and observation deck
