Prince of Wales Fort stands as a formidable stone bastion on the western shore of Hudson Bay, constructed between 1732 and 1771 by the Hudson's Bay Company to protect their fur trade interests. Though never attacked, the fort was surrendered without a fight to the French in 1782. Today, visitors can tour the well-preserved walls, cannons, and barracks, gaining insight into the harsh realities of colonial life in the subarctic. The site also offers stunning views of the bay and opportunities to spot beluga whales in summer.

Don't miss

  • Walk along the massive stone ramparts and imagine life as a fur trader or soldier.
  • See the original cannons and learn about the fort's role in the struggle for North America.
  • Spot beluga whales from the fort's walls during July and August.
