Tunnel Mountain, often called 'the sleeping giant' for its shape, offers one of Banff's most accessible summit hikes. The well-maintained trail climbs steadily through forest to a rocky summit with 360-degree views of Banff townsite, the Bow River, and the massive peaks of Mount Rundle and Cascade Mountain. Despite its modest elevation, the mountain provides a satisfying sense of accomplishment and is popular for sunrise or sunset hikes. The trail is also used by trail runners and snowshoers in winter.

Don't miss

  • Panoramic summit views of Banff, the Bow Valley, and Mount Rundle
  • A family-friendly hike with switchbacks that is steep but short (2.4 km one way)
  • Wildlife sightings: often see deer, squirrels, and occasionally bears
