Phnom Bakheng is a Hindu temple built on a natural hill, making it one of the oldest temple mountains in the Angkor area. Constructed in the late 9th century under King Yasovarman I, it was the centerpiece of the first Angkor capital. The temple has five tiers, and from its summit, visitors get a breathtaking panorama of Angkor Wat in the distance, especially at sunset. The climb is steep but short, and the site is extremely popular for sunset viewing, so arriving early is advisable.

Don't miss

  • Watch the sunset over Angkor Wat from the temple's upper platform.
  • Count the 108 small towers that surround the central sanctuary.
  • Photograph the intricate carvings of devatas and lintels.
