Bayon, the state temple of King Jayavarman VII, is the centerpiece of Angkor Thom. Its most distinctive feature is the 54 towers adorned with over 200 massive, enigmatic faces of Avalokiteshvara or perhaps the king himself. Visitors wander through three levels, passing galleries with intricate bas-reliefs depicting everyday life and historical battles. The faces, with their gentle smiles, seem to watch from every angle, creating a sense of calm and mystery. The temple's compact layout allows for easy exploration.

Don't miss

  • Stand in the central sanctuary and look up at the stone faces surrounding you
  • Study the bas-reliefs on the outer gallery, showing scenes of Khmer life and battles
  • Climb to the upper terrace for close-up views of the smiling faces
