The Varna Necropolis is an archaeological site of global significance, unearthed in the 1970s, revealing a Chalcolithic cemetery with the oldest known gold treasure. Excavations uncovered over 3,000 gold items, including jewelry and ceremonial objects, in graves dating to around 4600-4200 BCE. Visitors can view many of these artifacts at the Varna Archaeological Museum, while the site itself offers insight into ancient burial practices. The discovery reshaped understanding of early European civilization, highlighting a sophisticated society with trade networks and social hierarchy.
