Banya Bashi Mosque, built in 1576 under the direction of Ottoman architect Mimar Sinan, is one of Sofia's most prominent Islamic landmarks. Its name comes from the nearby mineral baths (banya means bath). The mosque features a single large dome, a slender minaret, and stone walls. Visitors can admire its elegant Ottoman architecture from the outside; non-Muslims are generally not permitted inside during prayer times. The mosque remains an active religious site for Sofia's Muslim community, and its courtyard offers a peaceful respite from the bustling city center.
Don't miss
- Admire the 16th-century Ottoman dome and minaret designed by Mimar Sinan
- Observe the active daily prayers from the courtyard (respectful distance)
- Photograph the mosque's stone facade and arched entrance near the mineral baths
