The Battle of Achelous (917) site, near the Aheloy River south of Pomorie, is one of medieval Bulgaria's most famous battlefields. Tsar Simeon I's victory over the Byzantines secured Bulgarian dominance in the Balkans. Visitors can walk the riverbanks and fields, where the clash unfolded, and see a memorial monument.
