The Stadium of Philippopolis is a partially excavated Roman stadium from the 2nd century AD, built during the reign of Emperor Hadrian. It once hosted athletic games and could seat up to 30,000 spectators. Today, the northern curved section (sphendone) is visible in a sunken plaza on the main pedestrian street, while the rest lies beneath modern buildings. Visitors can walk around the exposed ruins, see the original seating rows and track, and view a small exhibition of artifacts found during excavations. It's a striking example of ancient urban planning integrated into a modern city.

Don't miss

  • Stand on the original Roman track and imagine the ancient athletic competitions.
  • Examine the well-preserved seating tiers and the curved sphendone of the stadium.
  • View the small on-site exhibition with pottery, coins, and tools from the Roman era.
