Christ the Redeemer (statue)

Christ the Redeemer is an Art Deco statue of Jesus at the peak of Corcovado mountain in Rio de Janeiro's Tijuca National Park. It stands 30 meters tall on an 8-meter pedestal, with arms stretching 28 meters wide. Made of reinforced concrete and soapstone, it is the largest Art Deco sculpture in the world and a cultural icon of Brazil.

A bit of history

The idea for a Christian monument on Corcovado was first proposed in the 1850s but dismissed after Brazil became a republic. In 1920, the Catholic Circle of Rio revived the project, collecting donations from Brazilian Catholics. The statue was designed by Heitor da Silva Costa and Carlos Oswald, sculpted by Paul Landowski, with the face by Gheorghe Leonida. It opened on October 12, 1931. A chapel under the statue was consecrated in 2006.
