Minhocão, officially named Elevado Presidente João Goulart, is a controversial elevated highway that cuts through the heart of São Paulo. Built in the 1970s to ease traffic, it quickly became a symbol of urban blight due to noise and pollution. However, on weekends and public holidays, the road is closed to vehicles and opens to pedestrians, cyclists, and skaters. This transformation turns the concrete structure into a lively linear park, where families stroll, artists paint murals, and musicians perform. The elevated views offer a unique perspective of the city's skyline and the surrounding neighborhoods of Vila Buarque and Santa Cecília. Minhocão has become a beloved space for community events, outdoor exercise, and cultural expression, representing São Paulo's adaptive reuse of urban infrastructure.

A bit of history
Minhocão (meaning 'big earthworm' in Portuguese) was inaugurated in 1971 as the Elevado Presidente Costa e Silva. It was built to connect the west and east zones of São Paulo but faced criticism for its impact on nearby residents. In 2016, it was renamed after former president João Goulart. Weekend closures began in the 1990s and have since become a cherished tradition.
