The Edifício Itália (Italian Building) is one of São Paulo's most iconic skyscrapers, a towering 1960s landmark in the heart of the city and, for years, the tallest building in São Paulo. While it's primarily an office tower, its fame for visitors rests on what crowns it: the Terraço Itália, a restaurant and bar on the upper floors, and an observation deck offering one of the most spectacular 360-degree panoramas over the seemingly infinite skyline of South America's largest city. Standing beside the equally famous, curving Edifício Copan (designed by Oscar Niemeyer), it's a centrepiece of São Paulo's downtown architecture.
The view is the draw, a breathtaking sweep over the megacity, particularly memorable at sunset and after dark when the lights come on. You can visit the observation deck (sometimes with a minimum consumption or small fee at certain times) or dine at the Terraço Itália. Centrally located, it combines easily with downtown landmarks. Go on a clear evening for the finest view.
