The Cathedral Basilica of Salvador, built by the Jesuits in the 17th century, is a masterpiece of baroque architecture in Brazil's first capital. Its facade is relatively simple, but inside, visitors are awed by intricate woodcarvings, gold leaf, and azulejo tiles. The cathedral houses a museum with sacred art. It remains an active place of worship, blending spiritual significance with artistic grandeur. The church is a highlight of the Pelourinho district.
