The Carioca Aqueduct, commonly called Arcos da Lapa, is a striking example of colonial engineering in Rio de Janeiro. Built in the mid-18th century to supply water from the Carioca River, its 42 arches span 270 meters and dominate the Lapa district. Today, instead of water, the aqueduct carries the iconic yellow Santa Teresa tram, which clatters across the top, offering a unique way to explore the hillside neighborhood. Visitors can walk beneath the arches, which are beautifully lit at night, and enjoy the vibrant samba clubs and bars that surround this historic structure.

Don't miss

  • Walk beneath the 42 towering arches, especially beautiful when illuminated after dark.
  • Ride the Santa Teresa tram (bonde) as it crosses the aqueduct, a moving viewpoint over Lapa.
  • Explore the lively Lapa nightlife scene right at the base of the aqueduct.
