The Church of Saint Francis of Assisi, located in the Pampulha Modern Ensemble, is a landmark of modernist religious architecture. Designed by Oscar Niemeyer in 1943, its most striking feature is the series of parabolic arches that form the nave and bell tower, creating a sense of dynamic movement. The interior is adorned with a stunning blue-and-white tile mural by Cândido Portinari, depicting scenes from the life of Saint Francis. The church's unconventional design initially sparked controversy but is now celebrated as a bold fusion of art, faith, and modernism. Visitors can admire the exterior from the lakeside promenade and step inside to see the luminous, airy space.
Don't miss
- Marvel at the exterior's sweeping concrete arches, which seem to defy gravity and flow like waves.
- Study the Portinari tile panels inside, which cover the entire back wall with intricate religious imagery.
- Photograph the church from across the lake at sunset, when the building's curves are dramatically silhouetted.
