Wache Dzong is a compact fortress-monastery perched on a hilltop in Wangdue Phodrang, providing sweeping views of the Punakha and Wangdue valleys. Originally built as a watchtower, it now serves as a monastic retreat. Visitors climb a gentle path to reach the whitewashed walls and red-roofed temple, where monks chant in quiet halls. The site is less crowded than larger dzongs, offering a serene atmosphere for meditation and photography. Its strategic location made it historically important for guarding the region.
Don't miss
- Panoramic views of the Punakha and Wangdue valleys from the hilltop.
- Observe monks in prayer at the small but active temple.
- Walk the peaceful forest trail leading up to the dzong.
