Punakha Dzong is a magnificent fortress and monastery built in the 17th century, strategically located at the confluence of the Pho Chhu and Mo Chhu rivers. It is the winter residence of Bhutan's monastic body, led by the Je Khenpo. Visitors are struck by its grand whitewashed walls, intricate woodwork, and the massive central tower. The dzong houses sacred relics and offers panoramic views of the surrounding valleys. A visit includes crossing a traditional wooden bridge and exploring the serene courtyards and temples within.
