Dékin is a tranquil village within the Sô-Ava commune, nestled among the intricate waterways of Lake Nokoué. Like its more famous neighbor Ganvie, Dékin is built on stilts above the water, with houses, shops, and even schools raised on wooden poles. The village is less frequented by tourists, providing a more intimate encounter with the stilt-dwelling lifestyle. Visitors can glide through narrow canals by pirogue, observe fishermen casting nets, and see children paddling to school. The atmosphere is serene, with the gentle lapping of water and the occasional call of a bird. Dékin offers a raw, unfiltered perspective on life in Benin's aquatic villages.

Don't miss

  • Pirogue ride through quiet canals lined with stilt houses and floating markets
  • Watch local fishermen at work using traditional techniques and handwoven nets
  • Visit the village school or health center, both built on stilts above the water
