Dékanmey is a stilt village located in the Sô-Ava commune, part of the extensive network of lake settlements on Lake Nokoué in Benin. Like nearby Ganvie, Dékanmey is built entirely on stilts above the water, with houses, schools, and markets connected by wooden walkways and canoes. The village offers a quieter alternative to Ganvie, with fewer tourists and a more authentic atmosphere. Visitors can explore the floating market, watch artisans at work, and experience the unique water-based lifestyle of the Tofinu people.
Don't miss
- Explore the floating market where locals sell produce and crafts from canoes
- Visit a local artisan's workshop to see traditional woodcarving or weaving
- Take a guided canoe tour through the village's canals and surrounding lagoons
