Ladeuzeplein is the vibrant heart of Leuven, a spacious square that buzzes with students, locals, and visitors alike. Dominating the square is the monumental University Library, a neo-Renaissance building that was rebuilt after World War I with American support. Its 87-meter tower offers panoramic views of the city. In front of the library stands a surprising modern sculpture: a 23-meter-high totem pole by Chinese artist Chen Zhen, made of stacked bathtubs, sinks, and other objects. The square is lined with cafes and restaurants, making it a perfect spot for people-watching. In summer, the terrace of the library's café spills onto the square, and occasional markets or events take place here. The contrast between the historic library and the contemporary totem pole encapsulates Leuven's blend of tradition and innovation.
