Tyne Cot Cemetery is the largest Commonwealth war cemetery in the world, located near Passchendaele in the Ypres Salient. It contains 11,956 graves, mostly of soldiers from the UK, Canada, Australia, and New Zealand, who died in the battles of 1917. The site is dominated by a massive white stone memorial wall listing the names of 34,957 missing soldiers whose bodies were never found. The cemetery is meticulously maintained with rows of white headstones set among green lawns and flower beds. A visitor center provides context about the battles and the cemetery's history. The sheer scale is overwhelming, and the silence is broken only by birdsong. It's a must-visit for anyone interested in WWI history, offering a powerful, emotional experience.
