St Martin's Cathedral is the main church of Ypres, located just behind the Cloth Hall. Originally built in the 13th century in Gothic style, it was heavily damaged during World War I and later reconstructed. The cathedral features a tall spire, flying buttresses, and a serene interior with stained glass windows depicting war scenes and saints. One of its most distinctive features is the carillon, a set of 49 bells that chime regularly and are played in concerts. Visitors can climb the tower (by appointment) for a view of the city. Inside, the cathedral houses a memorial to the British Army and a statue of the Virgin Mary. The church remains an active place of worship and a peaceful retreat from the bustling square.
