Kemmelberg is the highest point in Flanders, rising 156 meters above the surrounding flatlands, offering sweeping views of the Ypres Salient and beyond. It was a strategic location during WWI, fiercely contested by German and Allied forces. Today, the hill is a mix of woodland, farmland, and memorials. At the summit, a French memorial honors the soldiers who died here, and a Belgian monument commemorates the 1918 liberation. Visitors can walk or bike up the hill, enjoying the scenery and interpretive panels. The site also has a café and picnic areas. It's a peaceful spot now, but the trenches and craters still visible in the woods remind of its violent past.

Don't miss

  • Panoramic views from the summit over Flanders
  • French memorial obelisk dedicated to the fallen
  • Belgian monument commemorating liberation
  • Visible trench lines and shell craters in the woods
  • Nearby Kemmelberg brewery for local beer
