The Grand-Place is the vibrant heart of Tournai, a spacious square lined with colorful guildhalls and dominated by the Belfry. It has been the city's main market square since medieval times, and today it still hosts a weekly market (Saturday mornings) and occasional festivals. The architecture around the square reflects different periods, from Gothic to Renaissance and Neoclassical, with many buildings featuring ornate facades and stepped gables. Cafés and restaurants spill onto the cobblestones, making it a perfect spot to sit and watch the world go by. The square's open layout offers excellent photo opportunities, especially with the Belfry as a backdrop.
Don't miss
- Visit the Saturday morning market for local produce, flowers, and crafts
- Admire the guildhalls' facades, especially the 17th-century 'Maison du Roi'
- Photograph the Belfry from the square, best angle for the tower
- Sit at a café terrace and enjoy the lively atmosphere
