Franchimont Castle, known locally as Château de Franchimont, is a ruined medieval fortress perched on a rocky promontory overlooking the town of Theux and the surrounding valley, just a short drive from Spa. Built between the 11th and 14th centuries, it was once a powerful stronghold of the Prince-Bishops of Liège. Today, its imposing stone walls, towers, and gateways stand as a testament to its strategic importance. Visitors can explore the ruins freely, climbing the remaining towers for spectacular views of the Ardennes countryside. The site is relatively undeveloped, with information panels explaining the castle's history. A small museum in the former guardhouse displays artifacts found during excavations. The atmosphere is evocative, especially in the late afternoon when the sun casts long shadows across the stone. The castle is also a popular spot for photography and picnics, with benches scattered around the grounds.
