St Symphorien Military Cemetery, located on the outskirts of Mons, is a unique and poignant World War I burial ground. Unlike most war cemeteries, it holds the remains of both Allied and German soldiers, reflecting the early battles of 1914 and the final engagements of 1918. The cemetery was established by the German army in 1914 and later expanded, with a central monument and a circular layout that emphasizes shared sacrifice. Among the 284 graves are those of the first and last British soldiers killed in the war: Private John Parr (killed August 21, 1914) and Private George Ellison (killed November 11, 1918). The site is beautifully maintained by the Commonwealth War Graves Commission and offers a peaceful, reflective atmosphere with its wooded setting and carefully tended lawns.
