The Great Beguinage of Leuven is a beautifully preserved medieval quarter that feels like a step back in time. This UNESCO World Heritage site was once home to a community of beguines – lay religious women who lived together in a semi-monastic but independent way. Today, the beguinage is a tranquil residential area, largely owned by the University of Leuven and used as student housing. Visitors can wander through its cobblestone streets, lined with charming 17th- and 18th-century houses, and admire the serene inner courtyards and gardens. The centerpiece is the Gothic Sint-Jan-de-Doperkerk (Church of St. John the Baptist), which dates back to the 13th century. Unlike many tourist attractions, the Great Beguinage is a living neighborhood, so you'll see students cycling through and locals going about their day. It's a perfect place for a quiet stroll, offering a glimpse into Leuven's rich history and architectural heritage. The beguinage is also a popular spot for photography, especially in spring when the gardens bloom.
