The Markt is Bruges' central square and has been the city's bustling hub since the Middle Ages. Surrounded by ornate guildhalls with stepped gables, the square is dominated by the iconic Belfry of Bruges, a 13th-century bell tower that offers panoramic views of the city. The Markt is a lively gathering place, filled with outdoor cafes, horse-drawn carriages, and seasonal markets. Visitors can climb the 366 steps of the Belfry to see the carillon and enjoy breathtaking vistas. The square is also home to the Provincial Court, a neo-Gothic building, and a statue of Jan Breydel and Pieter de Coninck, leaders of the 1302 Bruges Matins uprising. The Markt is the perfect starting point for exploring Bruges, with its cobblestone streets leading to other landmarks like the Burg square and the canals.
