The Church of Our Lady in Bruges is a magnificent Gothic church whose 122-meter brick spire dominates the city skyline. Built over several centuries from the 13th to the 15th, it is the largest church in Bruges and contains a wealth of art and history. The church's most famous treasure is Michelangelo's 'Madonna and Child' (also called the Bruges Madonna), a marble sculpture created around 1504. It is one of the few Michelangelo works to leave Italy during the artist's lifetime, purchased by a wealthy Bruges merchant. The sculpture is displayed in a side chapel, beautifully lit and serene. Beyond this masterpiece, the church houses the tombs of Mary of Burgundy and Charles the Bold, elaborate Gothic and Renaissance monuments. The interior is vast and airy, with soaring vaults, stained glass, and a magnificent carved pulpit. Visitors can also climb the tower for a fee, though it is not as high as the Belfry.
