The Schepenhuis is one of the oldest preserved municipal buildings in Flanders, dating from the 13th century. Originally serving as the aldermen's house and later the town hall, it now houses the City Museum (Stadsmuseum). The museum presents Aalst's history through engaging exhibits, including artifacts from the Carnival tradition, archaeological finds, and a scale model of the medieval city. The building itself is a highlight, with its stepped gable, Gothic windows, and a small courtyard. Visitors can see the old aldermen's chamber with its fireplace and learn about the city's role in the textile trade. The museum is compact but rich in local character.
