The Grote Markt is the vibrant heart of Aalst, a spacious cobblestone square surrounded by ornate 17th-century guildhalls and bustling terraces. At its center stands the belfry and the statue of Dirk Martens, the city's pioneering printer. The square is most famous for hosting the Aalst Carnival, a UNESCO-recognized event where satirical floats and costumed 'Voil Jeanetten' take over the streets. On ordinary days, the market square is a pleasant place to enjoy a Belgian beer or waffle while admiring the architecture, including the neo-Gothic town hall and the striking St. Martin's Church tower.
