Schmittenhöhe is the iconic mountain that towers over Zell am See, reaching 1,965 meters (6,447 feet). It offers some of the most spectacular panoramic views of the Austrian Alps, including the Hohe Tauern, the Kitzsteinhorn glacier, and the shimmering Lake Zell far below. The summit is easily reached by the Schmittenhöhebahn cable car, which departs from the town center and whisks you up in about 10 minutes. At the top, you'll find a network of hiking trails for all abilities, from gentle family walks to challenging alpine routes. In winter, Schmittenhöhe transforms into a ski resort with 77 km of slopes, mostly intermediate runs, plus a snow park and toboggan run. The summit restaurant, the Berghotel Schmittenhöhe, serves hearty Austrian cuisine on a sun terrace with unforgettable views. A highlight is the 'Panorama Trail' (Panoramaweg), a flat, accessible path that circles the summit and offers 360-degree views. For thrill-seekers, there's a via ferrata and a zipline in summer.
