Lake Zell (Zeller See) is the shimmering centerpiece of Zell am See, a crystal-clear alpine lake surrounded by the majestic peaks of the Hohe Tauern and the Schmittenhöhe. The lake's pristine waters are ideal for swimming in summer, with designated bathing areas and lidos (strandbäder) along its shores. Boating is a popular activity, you can rent rowboats, paddleboards, or electric boats, or take a leisurely cruise on the MS Schmittenhöhe, a historic steamer. The lakeside promenade stretches for several kilometers, offering flat, paved paths perfect for walking, jogging, or cycling. Benches and grassy spots invite you to pause and take in the panoramic views. In winter, the lake sometimes freezes, providing a magical setting for ice skating when conditions allow. The lake's distinctive emerald-green color comes from glacial silt, and its clean water quality makes it one of Austria's most beloved swimming lakes.
