The Schafberg Railway is a steam-powered cog railway that has been carrying passengers up the Schafberg mountain since 1893. The 5.85-kilometer (3.6-mile) track climbs a gradient of up to 26%, making it one of the steepest cog railways in Austria. The journey takes about 35 minutes each way, passing through forests, alpine meadows, and rocky outcrops. The vintage steam locomotives (and occasional diesel) offer an authentic experience, with open-sided carriages that provide unobstructed views of Lake Wolfgang and the surrounding peaks. At the top, passengers can step off directly into the summit area. The railway is a beloved attraction for families, railway enthusiasts, and anyone seeking a scenic ride.
