Schafberg, rising 1,783 meters above the Salzkammergut, is one of Austria's most iconic viewpoints. From its summit, visitors are treated to a sweeping panorama that encompasses Lake Wolfgang, the Dachstein glacier, and countless other peaks. The mountain is accessible via the historic Schafberg Railway, a cogwheel train that climbs steep gradients through alpine meadows and forests. At the top, a network of walking trails leads to viewpoints like the summit cross and the Schafbergalm. The experience is distinctly alpine: crisp air, wildflowers in summer, and snow-capped vistas in winter. Unlike many peaks, Schafberg offers a comfortable summit with a restaurant and shelter, making it suitable for all ages. The journey itself is a highlight, with the train chugging past grazing cows and offering ever-expanding views. For hikers, there are also trails from the base, but the railway is the most popular and accessible way to reach the top.
