Schafberg is a 1,783-meter (5,850 ft) peak that towers over Lake Wolfgang and the surrounding Salzkammergut region. Its summit provides one of the most iconic vistas in Austria, with a 360-degree panorama that includes the Dachstein glacier, the Wolfgangsee, and dozens of other lakes. The mountain is a paradise for hikers, with well-marked trails ranging from a gentle 1.5-hour walk from the top station to a challenging full-day ascent from the valley. The summit area features a historic hotel and restaurant, where visitors can enjoy refreshments while soaking in the views. In clear weather, the sight of the sun setting over the Alps from Schafberg is unforgettable. The mountain is also a popular paragliding launch site.
