Schwarzensee is a secluded, dark-water lake nestled in a high-altitude valley in the Salzkammergut, near Sankt Gilgen. The lake gets its name from the deep, dark color of its water, which reflects the surrounding dense forests and steep mountain slopes. Accessible only by a moderate hike, Schwarzensee rewards visitors with a sense of wilderness and tranquility. The trail winds through alpine meadows and past rocky outcrops, with the lake appearing suddenly as a shimmering black mirror. The area is popular with hikers and nature lovers seeking solitude. There are no facilities at the lake, so visitors must bring their own supplies. The surrounding peaks offer further hiking opportunities, including routes to the Schafberg and the Postalm. The lake is also a good spot for a refreshing dip, though the water is cold even in summer.
