Mondsee, one of the larger lakes in the Salzkammergut region, stretches near the town of Sankt Gilgen. Its strikingly clear, emerald-green waters are framed by rolling hills and alpine peaks, making it a favorite for swimming, sailing, and stand-up paddleboarding in summer. The lake’s shoreline is dotted with small beaches, promenades, and lakeside restaurants where visitors can relax with a view. A standout landmark is the Basilica of St. Michael in the town of Mondsee, a former Benedictine monastery church with a striking white facade and ornate interior. The basilica gained international fame as the wedding church in the film 'The Sound of Music.' Walking along the lakefront or taking a boat cruise offers panoramic vistas of the surrounding mountains. In winter, the lake often freezes partially, creating a serene, icy landscape. The area is well-connected by hiking trails that lead to viewpoints like the Schafberg, providing a bird's-eye perspective of the lake and its surroundings.
