Lake Fuschl lies nestled in a dense forest about 5 kilometers east of Sankt Gilgen, offering a more tranquil alternative to the larger lakes in the region. Its deep blue waters are surrounded by wooded hills, creating a peaceful, almost secretive atmosphere. The lake is a popular spot for fishing, swimming, and kayaking, with several small piers and grassy banks for sunbathing. The most prominent feature is Schloss Fuschl, a medieval castle turned luxury hotel that sits on a peninsula, its turrets reflected in the water. The castle’s history dates back to the 15th century, and it was once a hunting lodge for the archbishops of Salzburg. Visitors can walk around the castle grounds (though the interior is for hotel guests) and enjoy the lake views from the adjacent park. A circular hiking trail (about 6 km) loops around the entire lake, passing through quiet forests and offering glimpses of the water. In autumn, the foliage adds vibrant colors to the landscape. The lake is also known for its excellent trout fishing.

Don't miss

  • Walk or bike the 6 km circular trail around the lake
  • Photograph Schloss Fuschl from the lakeside path
  • Swim from the small beaches or grassy banks
  • Fish for trout (permits required)
  • Enjoy a meal at the lakeside restaurant near the castle
