Salzburg Zoo, also known as Tiergarten Hellbrunn, is a charming zoo located on the expansive grounds of Hellbrunn Palace, just south of Salzburg. It houses more than 1,200 animals representing 150 species, including elephants, giraffes, big cats, and native European wildlife. The zoo is designed with spacious, naturalistic enclosures that mimic the animals' native habitats. Visitors can walk through a walk-in aviary, watch sea lions being fed, and observe monkeys in a large outdoor area. The zoo is particularly popular with families, offering a petting zoo, playgrounds, and educational programs. Its setting within the palace park adds a historical dimension: the zoo was originally established as a menagerie in the 17th century. Today, it combines conservation, education, and recreation. The zoo's layout is easy to navigate, with shaded paths and rest areas. A visit pairs well with exploring Hellbrunn Palace and its famous trick fountains.
