Mirabell Palace is a stunning baroque palace located just across the Salzach River from the historic centre. Built in 1606 for Prince-Archbishop Wolf Dietrich, it was originally called Altenau and later renamed Mirabell (meaning 'beautiful view'). The palace itself now houses municipal offices and the Marble Hall, a venue for concerts and weddings. But the real draw is the Mirabell Gardens, a meticulously manicured baroque garden featuring the famous Pegasus Fountain, hedge mazes, and flower beds. The gardens are a popular spot for locals and tourists alike, offering a peaceful escape from the city bustle. From the garden, you get a postcard-perfect view of Hohensalzburg Fortress towering above. The gardens were featured in the film 'The Sound of Music' where the von Trapp children sing 'Do-Re-Mi'.

Don't miss

  • Pegasus Fountain, a marble sculpture of the winged horse
  • The Hedge Theatre, an open-air stage surrounded by hedges
  • The Dwarf Garden with whimsical stone dwarf statues
  • The Marble Hall (Marmorsaal), used for concerts and weddings
  • The view of Hohensalzburg Fortress from the garden terrace
