Hohensalzburg Fortress (Festung Hohensalzburg) towers over Salzburg from a hilltop 120 meters above the Old Town. Built in 1077 and expanded over centuries, it is one of the largest and best-preserved medieval castles in Europe. Visitors can reach the fortress by funicular or a steep walk. Inside, explore the state rooms, including the Golden Hall with its ornate ceiling and the Golden Chamber with intricate woodwork. The fortress also houses the Salzburg Fortress Museum, which displays medieval artifacts, weapons, and instruments of torture. The panoramic views from the battlements are breathtaking, encompassing the city, the Salzach River, and the Alps. The fortress is also a venue for concerts and events, including the annual Salzburg Festival.
