Getreidegasse is the historic heart of Salzburg's shopping district, a narrow, bustling street lined with tall townhouses that date back centuries. What makes it truly distinctive are the elaborate wrought-iron signs hanging above many shop entrances, each one a work of art that once identified the trade of the merchant within. Today, the street is filled with international brands alongside traditional Austrian shops, bakeries, and souvenir stores. The most famous address is No. 9, where Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart was born in 1756; his birthplace is now a museum. The street is pedestrian-only, so you can stroll leisurely, peering into courtyards and arcades that reveal hidden cafes and boutiques. The atmosphere is lively, especially during summer and Christmas markets.
