Murinsel (Mur Island) is an artificial island floating in the Mur River in Graz, designed by American artist Vito Acconci. Shaped like a giant blue shell or a half-open mussel, it is both a pedestrian bridge and a public space. The island connects the two riverbanks and features a café, a small amphitheater, and a playground. Visitors can walk across the island, enjoy a coffee while watching the river flow, or attend one of the occasional concerts or events held in the amphitheater. What makes it distinctive is its surreal, organic design that blends art and function, it feels like a living organism on the water. The experience is serene yet urban: the sound of the river, the views of the city skyline, and the gentle sway of the structure underfoot. At night, the island is illuminated, creating a magical atmosphere.

Don't miss

  • The café: enjoy a drink while floating on the Mur River.
  • The amphitheater: a small outdoor venue for performances and events.
  • The playground: a fun spot for children with river views.
  • The walkway: a scenic pedestrian bridge connecting both sides of the river.
  • Nighttime illumination: the island glows with blue and white lights after dark.
