Mariatrost Basilica is a magnificent Baroque pilgrimage church perched on a hill in the northeastern part of Graz. The church is dedicated to the Virgin Mary and has been a popular pilgrimage site since the 17th century. The exterior is dominated by twin towers and a grand staircase leading up to the entrance. Inside, visitors are greeted by lavish Baroque decoration, including frescoes by Johann Baptist Scheidt, a high altar with a miraculous image of Mary, and ornate stucco work. The basilica also features a crypt and a treasury. The hilltop location offers stunning views of Graz and the surrounding countryside, making it a rewarding destination for both pilgrims and tourists. The surrounding park is ideal for a leisurely stroll.
