Sankt Margarethen im Burgenland is a small village near Eisenstadt that draws visitors for its extraordinary Roman quarry, a UNESCO World Heritage site. The quarry features massive sandstone cliffs carved by centuries of extraction, creating a natural amphitheater with remarkable acoustics. During summer, the quarry transforms into the stage for the famous St. Margarethen Opera Festival, where grand operas are performed under the stars. Even without a performance, the site is impressive: you can walk among the towering rock faces and see traces of Roman tools. The surrounding village offers charming wine taverns where you can sample local Burgenland wines.

Don't miss

  • Attend an open-air opera performance during the summer festival
