Mautern an der Donau is a historic town located on the south bank of the Danube River, opposite Durnstein. Its old town features narrow cobblestone streets, colorful medieval buildings, and a relaxed atmosphere. The town is known for its Roman heritage, with well-preserved ruins including parts of the ancient fortifications and a Roman museum. Visitors can explore the remains of the Roman camp of Favianis, which include walls and a reconstructed gate. The Danube promenade offers lovely views of the river and the Wachau Valley. Mautern also has several wine taverns (Heurigen) where you can sample local wines. The town's compact size makes it easy to explore on foot, blending history with modern-day charm.
